Did you know? We are developing our new play in collaboration with playwright, Meg Braem.
During her time as the Lee Playwright in Residence at the University of Alberta, Meg advised us on the development of two of our plays, Claire & Jacob and Reading the Signs. This year we have the pleasure of collaborating with her to develop our new play.
Currently the Canadian Writer-in-Residence at the University of Calgary, Meg’s work includes Blood: A Scientific Romance and The Josephine Knot. Her plays have been nominated for a Governors General’s Literary Award and won the Alberta Literary Award for Drama, the Alberta Playwriting Competition and Playwright Theatre Centre’s “The News Competition.”
Our new play Way Back is about the years, days, months, and hours throughout our lives. A kaleidoscope of true stories – growing up during WWII, farm life in Alberta and Sri Lanka, birth and motherhood, growing up in Trinidad, and more – this play remembers the moments of joy, hardship, triumph and magic we all experience.
We are performing Way Back over Zoom this May and June, and also recording it as a radio play for people to listen and enjoy long after performances have ended. If safe to do so, we will also be performing Way Back in-person fall 2021.
We have had such a wonderful time working with Meg and can’t wait to see how this play develops over the next year.
